OUAN502 - Pitch Perfect, Competition

One of the first tasks we were given upon forming our groups was to look up different animation studios that were doing relatively similar things to our studio and to see what they were doing well as well as essentially discovering where we would fit into the market. My concern at first was that we would be doing the same thing as a range of other studios and that it would be direct competition for work. I soon realised that from the outside at least looks like every studio has a specific style that they work in, and since we're specifically narrative driven animation then that I suppose is our style and our niche as a studio. I searched for the most prominent studios in the Yorkshire area as well as studios as far away as London. I tried to keep in mind that even a studio in London can be competition in some form because it's not that far away and the lack of studios in the country means that each studio is a potential competitor for work. It was interesting seeing all of the distinct types of work that companies have produced and in many ways the similarities when it comes down to the way they present themselves online and through social media. I also looked a little further than just the UK to find out what companies in other countries with a similar output were doing, and what they looked like. I found that companies such as a Sun Creature Studios and Blue Zoo in particular had distinct styles in their work and that if I client was looking for a certain type of work they would be able to determine who to go to based on this. So it raised the question to me, is it better to have a distinct style as a company or be able to adapt a range of styles? The studios I looked at are listed below.

  • Blue Zoo
  • Studio AKA
  • Golden Wolf
  • Sun Creature
  • Distant Future
  • Kilogramme
  • We Are Formation
  • Treat Studios
  • Fettle Animation
  • Bloom Animation
  • Maga Animation
